We know your dog is the most popular in your house, but what does the rest of the country think? According to our search data, almost every region in England LOVES Cocker Spaniels — this breed is adaptable, friendly, and can live very happily in all types of households. But, we wanted to dive deeper and figure out which dog is the most well-loved breed in each region, after Cocker Spaniels.

Yorkshire and the Humber

Our search data suggests that the most favoured dog breed in Yorkshire and the Humber (after the much-loved Cocker Spaniel) is the Golden Retriever. This breed appears very popular across England, due to its loving and family-oriented personality. They are also admired for their gentle temperament and eagerness to please. Golden Retrievers’ calm and affectionate nature makes them perfect therapy dogs, bringing smiles to people in need.

Being a more active dog, they require a lot of exercise, which is likely another reason those in Yorkshire and the Humber opt for this breed, given the abundance of green space in the Peak District and North Yorkshire Moors.

Some other breeds have seen a rise in popularity in this region — the Australian Cattle dog has had a 30% increase in searches year-on-year, and the Belgian Sheepdog (aka Belgian Shepherd) has gained interest in the past three months, seeing a 40% climb.

North East

The North East also loves Golden Retrievers! The beloved dogs were originally bred in Scotland, which means they have a thick double coat, allowing them to brave the colder weather. As the North East is one of the closest regions to Scotland, it’s not surprising that people opt for Golden Retrievers, with the weather being chillier than down south. However, the most popular dog breed in this region after the Cocker Spaniel is the Dachshund, which is also known to tolerate cold weather well, due to their thick, wire-haired coat.

Certain breeds have seen a rise in searches in the North East in the past year, including the Belgian Sheepdog. Cane Corso’s have also become popular in the last three months and have seen a 129% increase in searches!

North West

In the North West, the most beloved dog breed (after the much-loved Cocker Spaniel) is Dobermann, according to our search data. Again, this breed appears to be favoured across the country, which is certainly not a surprise as Dobermanns are extremely loyal to their owners. They are also very intelligent dogs with bundles of energy, which makes them great candidates to be police and working dogs

Cairn Terriers and Miniature Pinschers are breeds that in the past year have seen an increase in popularity in the North West, with yearly searches growing by 26% for both. More recently, the Boxer breed has had heightened interest.

Midlands

People in the West Midlands also love Dobermanns, with them coming second place to  Cocker Spaniels. Dobermanns are adaptable and can live in the city, which suggests why people in the Midlands love this breed as it contains a heavy concentration of large industrial cities, including Birmingham, Coventry, and Leicester.

As for the East Midlands, they are yet another region that adores Dachshunds! Like the West Midlands, the East has a mix of industrial, built-up areas as well as smaller towns – this breed is very compatible with a range of environments, making them a great choice for those in the Midlands.

Additionally, the Bulldog has become more favoured in the Midlands over the past three months. Like the North East, the Belgian Sheepdog has also increased in popularity, with yearly search data increasing by 75%.

South East

People in the South East love Cocker Spaniels and Golden Retrievers, but their third favourite dog breed is Dachshund. Big bundles of energy, Dachshunds are affectionate, playful and utterly devoted to their owners — it’s no wonder they are the South East’s favourite. Dachshunds prefer walking on flat ground due to potential back issues, therefore, a long stroll (approximately 60 minutes) on Brighton Beach should do the trick!

The Australian Cattle Dog has seen a 26%  search rise in the past year in the South East region. Another breed growing in popularity recently in this area is the Belgian Sheepdog — this breed saw an increase in searches in the past three months.

South West

Travelling over to the South West, with even more beaches, it’s not a surprise that its residents also love Dachshunds, coming in second place behind Cocker Spaniels.

Another breed that seems to be favoured in the southwest region is the Poodle. Search data reveals that searches for this breed have doubled in the past year. The Italian breed, Cane Corso, has also seen searches increase by almost 100% in the last three months.

East England

The Dachshund is the second most popular breed for people in the East of England. On another coastline, the Dachshund can enjoy a beach walk at Southend-on-Sea or stroll through the city of Cambridge on flat land.

Bulldogs are also a well-loved breed in this region and have seen an influx in interest in recent months, with a 50% growth in searches. The Poodle has also seen a 23% increase in searches in the last year.

London

An anomaly from the rest of the regions, Golden Retrievers were the most popular breed of dog among Londoners. However, the Rottweiler came in second place. Rottweilers are highly intelligent and confident, with a strong instinct to guard and protect, making them excellent family protection dogs. With a lot of affluent areas in London, this could be a reason why people are opting for Rottweilers to protect their homes.

Other favoured breeds in the capital included the American Foxhound and Dalmatian, with a search increase for both. Searches for Dalmatians grew by 23% year-on-year, whilst the American Foxhound saw a 24% rise in the past three months.

It’s clear that Cocker Spaniels are the most popular breeds, but we shouldn’t overlook the Golden Retriever, Dobermann, Dachshund, and Rottweiler!
