Service and Assistance Dog Training in the UK
Training a dog to become a service or assistance animal requires far more than obedience – it takes structure, patience, expert handling and a deep understanding of both canine behaviour and human needs. That’s what we offer through our specialist service and assistance dog training programme, trusted by clients in Lancashire and across the UK.
We work with individuals and families looking to train their dogs to support physical, emotional or neurological needs. Whether it’s for autism support, PTSD, medical alert or mobility assistance, we provide a tailored pathway that matches the right dog with the right structure and teaches the essential behaviours for day-to-day independence and confidence.
Our training is built around real-life experience, not just theory. We understand how important it is that your dog can work reliably in public, remain calm under pressure, and genuinely improve your quality of life – and that’s exactly what we focus on.
Who We Train as Service and Assistance Dogs
We train both dogs that are already owned by the client and dogs we source and train from the ground up. In either case, the process is highly individualised. Not every dog is suitable for service work, so the first step is always a consultation and temperament assessment.
We work with:
- Individuals seeking autism support dogs
- People with PTSD, anxiety or mental health conditions
- Clients needing mobility or physical assistance dogs
- Owners looking to train for medical alert support (e.g. diabetes, seizures)
- Children and adults needing long-term support from a trained dog
For some, this means taking a well-mannered pet to the next level of task-based training. For others, it’s about identifying and raising a dog from puppyhood with specific goals in mind. Either way, our training plans are realistic, responsible and always focused on safety and reliability.
What Our Service Dog Training Includes
Every dog and handler team is different, but our assistance dog training typically includes:
- Structured obedience and public access control
- Exposure to a wide variety of environments (shops, public transport, crowds)
- Focus work and calmness in busy surroundings
- Task-based training, such as tactile interruption, retrieval, alerting or deep pressure therapy
- Confidence building and environmental neutrality
- Handling support for the owner (or parent/guardian in children’s cases)
We break tasks down in a way dogs understand, using fair and clear training techniques. You’ll be supported every step of the way, with regular progress reviews, video feedback (where appropriate), and ongoing training advice.
Why Choose Our Assistance Dog Training?
With years of hands-on experience training working dogs, we understand the level of control, obedience and focus required in a service animal. Our trainers are skilled in behaviour, structured obedience, and real-world application – not just classroom settings.
We do not offer accreditation for owner-trained service dogs (this is not currently regulated in the UK), but our training meets high welfare and performance standards that mirror those used by recognised assistance dog programmes.
Clients work with us because we:
- Tailor every programme to the individual and their condition
- Provide one-to-one sessions, residential training or ongoing support
- Train dogs in real-life environments
- Are honest about a dog’s suitability for the role
- Offer both sourcing and training if needed
- Continue to support you long after the core training is complete
If needed, we also offer residential training for dogs needing a more intensive foundation before returning home to continue their role as a service companion.
Assistance Dog Training for Children and Families
Many of the clients we support are families with autistic children or children with complex needs. We take great care in working with these families, not just in terms of training the dog, but in helping everyone feel confident and safe.
In these situations, we can help you understand how to use your dog’s presence and tasks effectively, reduce overstimulation or anxiety during daily challenges, and ensure that your dog remains safe and focused, even in unpredictable settings.
Our training can support:
- Night-time reassurance
- Public outings and safety (e.g. anchor training)
- Anxiety regulation through pressure tasks
- Building routines and confidence
- Social interaction and calming behaviours
FAQs – Service & Assistance Dog Training
Can you train a dog I already own to be a service dog?
Yes, provided your dog passes a suitability assessment. We will be honest about your dog’s potential and create a training plan tailored to their temperament and your needs.
How long does service dog training take?
This varies depending on the dog’s starting point and the tasks needed. Most dogs take 6 to 18 months to train fully, depending on age, experience and complexity of training goals.
Do you provide fully trained assistance dogs?
We can source and train suitable dogs from puppyhood on request. These are matched carefully to your needs and involve ongoing work with you as the handler.
Is your training accredited?
There is currently no legal requirement or government-accredited register for assistance dogs in the UK. However, our training is based on the standards expected of public access and support dogs, and we help ensure your dog meets those expectations reliably.
Can my assistance dog travel or access public places?
Yes – assistance dogs have legal access to public places in the UK, provided they are trained to behave safely and hygienically in those environments.
