How Our Maintenance Dog Training Works
Step 1 – Review Your Dog’s Current Performance
We look at your dog’s existing obedience and protection work to establish what remains strong and where some refinement may be useful.
Step 2 – Review Owner Handling
Your own handling is part of the process. We can identify inconsistencies in commands or positioning that may be affecting your dog’s response.
Step 3 – Refresh and Reinforce Training
Training is then focused on the areas that need attention, whether that means sharpening established obedience or reviewing protection skills.
Step 4 – Agree on Ongoing Training Priorities
We’ll identify what should be reinforced between sessions and give you practical guidance for continuing the work at home.
Step 5 – Schedule Follow-Up Training
Further training can be arranged through your maintenance programme, giving you continued access to the A&T Trained Dogs team as and when you need it.
Our Protection Dog Maintenance Programmes
A&T Trained Dogs offers one-year and three-year protection dog maintenance programmes. Both provide regular follow-up training, while the three-year option adds more extensive training for owners looking for longer-term support.
Although the programmes are structured around one or three years, you are purchasing a set number of follow-up days. These can be used at your discretion over the period that is most convenient for you, rather than being tied to fixed appointment dates.
One-Year Maintenance Programme
Our one-year programme includes three days of follow-up every 90 days across the year. It is designed for owners who want regular professional check-ins during the period following their dog’s training. Those days can be used to review obedience, refresh protection work, address changes in performance and check that your own handling remains consistent. Follow-up arrangements can be discussed with our team when planning your sessions.
Three-Year Maintenance Programme
The three-year programme also includes three days of follow-up every 90 days, extending professional support across three years.
Alongside the follow-up days, the programme includes up to six weeks of intensive training at A&T Trained Dogs’ facility, typically taken as two weeks each year. This gives owners the option to return their dog for a more concentrated training period while on holiday or whenever more substantial refresher work would be useful.
A collection and drop-off service may also be available as part of this programme. Speak to our team about arrangements when booking.
Intensive Refresher Training
The three-year programme includes up to six weeks of intensive protection dog refresher training at our Lancaster facility. This gives our trainers dedicated time to work closely with your dog when a standard follow-up session is not the most suitable option.
An intensive stay may be useful after a longer break from structured training, when advanced obedience needs refining or when protection skills would benefit from a more thorough review. It can also be planned around holidays or periods when you are away, with training typically taken in two-week blocks each year.
Training Support for the Owner, Not Just the Dog
Even a highly trained dog relies on consistent communication from the person handling them. Our protection dog follow-up training gives owners continued access to professional guidance rather than leaving them to maintain everything alone after handover.
Sessions provide an opportunity to revisit commands, improve timing, correct handling inconsistencies, practise established skills and ask questions about any changes you’ve noticed. The aim is to keep you confident in handling your dog as their training continues.
