At A&T Trained Dogs, we know how much dog owners love their pets, but being a dog owner doesn’t always go to plan. Some dogs can have problems with aggression – that could be aggression towards other dogs, to strangers, or even the family, it can be a stressful situation. Luckily, our expert trainers and behaviourists are here to help with our aggressive dog training camp.
What is Aggressive Dog Training Camp?
Aggressive dog training camp is an intensive course tailored for dogs with extreme aggression. These dogs require a specialised dog behaviourist who understands a dog’s body language and dog psychology.
Types of Aggression That Our Aggressive Dog Training Camp Covers
Dog-to-Dog Aggression
Dog-to-dog aggression is the most common type of aggression that we help dog owners tackle. There are typically specific circumstances where a dog displays aggression towards another dog, as there are instances where a dog will be fine with a certain type of dog, but not others. Or, if they do behave well on a lead, they will act irrationally off-lead or vice versa, and they have ‘barrier frustration’ which is where they will behave off-lead but not whilst on one.
Dog-to-People Aggression
Dog-to-people aggression tends to be caused by a lack of socialisation as a puppy. This is because they are still young and are cautious of people which may lead to owners avoiding those situations in the future, which can often make the problem worse. Other instances include if the dog has dominant aggression and wants to be in control of everything. Or, they may be aggressive towards people due to previous mistreatment.
Other Aggression
Other aggressive behaviours include a dog showing aggression when they don’t want something to happen or don’t want something taken away from them – this could be anything from their food or a particular toy. Over the years, they will have learned that that is fine to act that due to an uninformed owner allowing it to happen.
Reasons Why A Dog Shows Signs of Aggression
There could be a number of reasons why a dog lashes out, and the reasons why tend to fit into one of the following categories:
- Territorial
- Possessive
- Protection
- Fearful
- Unsocialised
- Defensive
- Experiencing Pain
- Resource Guarding
What Kind of Dog is Aggressive Dog Training Camp Suitable For?
A lot of the time, an aggressive dog was not born that way, a lack of training often leads to aggressive behaviour because they are responding to situations instinctively, as they haven’t been taught any differently. It could also be down to a specific breed trait that isn’t currently being fulfilled. Therefore, aggressive dog training camp is most suited for dogs that are out of control, haven’t had any previous training, or their breed traits aren’t being met.
Aggressive Dog Training Camp Process
Step 1: Consultation
When you bring your dog to A&T Trained Dogs, you will meet one of our trainers and behaviourists and have an initial consultation. This is so our trainers can understand the situation better. From this, we will be able to give you a rough idea of how long the process will take.
Step 2: Assessment
Our expert behaviourist will then assess your dog by spending all day, every day with them in the first week to collect information to build a tailored plan for your dog. The length of the programme depends completely on many factors, including breed, age, sex, the severity of aggression and the type of aggression.
We will work at your dog’s pace, as it is crucial to provide an opportunity to advance, without the risk of too many big steps being taken at once.
The three main areas we aim to advance in are:
Desensitising = This encourages your dog to feel differently about the problem.
Trust = Our trainers will work tirelessly to teach your dog to trust them and follow cues.
Confidence = Our aim is to build their confidence in handling various environments and continue this behaviour.
Step 3: Rehabilitation
Once the course is completed, you will receive an extensive handover to teach you how to continue moving forward and correct your relationship with your dog. We offer a 4-week plan to follow at home, plus a follow-up session on site.
