What is Protection Dog Training?

Protection dog training is a type of training programme which provides individuals and families with personal security and peace of mind. These dogs are trained to protect their owners from threats such as a home invasion, robbery, or assault. It is important to note that they will be fully obedient both on and off the lead, making them safe around younger children, older children, and adults.

What Kind of Dogs is Protection Dog Training Suitable For?

At A&T Trained Dogs, we strongly recommend protection dog training only be undertaken by dogs who have sufficiently matured. Attempting to train a puppy or an immature dog through a course of protection training can have negative impacts on their development. However, we can introduce skills relating to protection to younger dogs to introduce them to the foundations in a playful way.

How To Train A Dog For Protection

Protection dogs require a high level of training, however, before this, they must be able to carry out a number of tests, regarding their drive and temperament. We will assess your dog for one week to make sure it can proceed with their journey of becoming a protection dog.

Not every dog regardless of the breed has the genetics, courage, and drive to do the job. Whilst it may be disappointing to find out your dog doesn’t have what it takes, it is better to find this out at the beginning, rather than further down the line.

If your dog has passed our assessment, we will create a protection training plan which will involve rigorous training and will require significant time and resources. They will first undertake essential obedience training and move on to more advanced training involving scent detection, tracking, defence and attack. Your dog will be trained to work under high levels of stress and to remain calm and focused in dangerous situations. As well as this, they will be socialised to interact safely with people and other animals, so they remain confident, obedient, and protective, but not aggressive.

We train our dogs to understand a threatening situation and react to commands, rather than being equipment focused. Instead of focusing on the training tools, we train our dogs to ‘warn’ and ‘attack’ on your command and to stop just as quickly when instructed. This ensures your family protection dog is ready to protect in any real-life situation that may occur.

After the protection dog training is complete, we offer a maintenance programme which ensures your dog continues to respond to a high standard. These refresher training sessions are free of charge if you bring your dog back every 6 months for 2 weeks.

Benefits of Protection Dog Training

Protection

Obviously, the biggest benefit of owning a protection dog is the extra layer of security they will bring. They will improve your personal protection by sticking by your side and identifying threats to your safety. Not only this, but they will be loving, friendly and provide you with companionship when there is no danger present.

Peace of Mind

As protection dogs are able to assess danger on their own, they can protect you in situations without any verbal commands needed. Therefore, you can sleep better in your home knowing you are protected and safe.
