Frequently Asked Questions

What good characteristics does a police dog have?

Police dogs are chosen for different working roles because of certain characteristics. These include intelligence to learn a wide range of tasks quickly, following commands without losing focus. Police dogs also need to be physically fit, with a strong build and good stamina for running, jumping and climbing. For certain police roles, dogs may be required to have a strong prey drive to apprehend suspected criminals, but also remain in control with commands. We choose breeds such as German Shepherds, Labradors and Cocker Spaniels that are highly alert, observant and intelligent. With our training, they become the loyal comrades that help make up a police service.

What is the typical age of your police dogs?

Our police dogs for sale are typically aged between 12 months and three years old. This is generally when formal training begins, and their careers typically span six to nine years, with the dogs retiring between the ages of eight and ten.

How are the dogs socialised?

Part of police dog training includes structured socialisation. Dogs are exposed to different people, animals and environments to build confidence and stability. This includes structured obedience and public access control, exposure to environments like shops, public transport and crowds, prioritising focus work and calmness in busy surroundings, and developing confidence in social situations.

How do you match a dog to an organisation or handler?

We match police dogs with the right role, organisation and handler through personalised training solutions. Every organisation has different requirements, so we work closely with organisations and their representatives to tailor training to meet direct needs and operational roles with handlers.
