Each dog has their own training need, which is why you can undertake various types of dog training. Most breeds will need obedience or socialisation training to ensure they react calmly in public situations and create a great bond between the two of you. However, you can get more specialist or advanced training, depending on your situation and needs. See our guide to the different dog training types below.

Protection Training

Bring peace of mind to you and your family with protection dog training. Not to be confused with guard dogs, protection training is there to give your dog the tools to act as a deterrent to potential threats. This can be both within the house or in public. A protection dog is also a great family dog, who will integrate easily with both adults and children. Find out which are the best dog breeds for protection

Behavioural Training

Dog behaviourists are specialists in reversing specific types of behaviours or bad habits that dogs have. This could either be from certain environments, temperaments or previous ownership. For example, your dog could show aggression in busy environments or be destructive due to a lack of socialisation. Behavioural training can change these behaviours and the state of mind of your dog in a variety of situations.

Therapy Training

Certain breeds of dogs can be trained to help their owners in specific situations feel more calm. For this to happen, they generally need to undergo a temperament test to ensure they don’t have bad habits or behaviours in order to be trained. Therapy dog training has an amazing outcome of helping people stay calm and relaxed in stressful situations. These dogs are not only used by owners but are commonly taken to group settings such as hospitals and care homes to have a positive impact on the residents.

Assistance Dog Training

Service and assistance dog training are some individual’s lifeline to living independently. They help both adults and children with a range of disabilities in everyday life. Assistance dogs can help with tasks such as opening and closing doors and retrieving dropped items. Not only this, they increase socialisation and help in public places such as shops and public transport. Assistance dogs can be suitable for a variety of mental and physical needs such as autism, epilepsy, PTSD blindness and more.

Obedience Training

Obedience training is key to having a great bond with your dog. This teaches them basic commands sit, stand and recall, all that you would need in the house and in public settings. With obedience training, you can tailor it to your needs, whether you need basic training or more advanced training. Advanced commands will be dependent on what you need the outcome to be, however, it can be training such as distant recall, off-leash behaviour and hand commands.

Agility Training

Agility training helps to increase the physical development of your dog. An agility course will be a variety of obstacles such as jumping hurdles, see-saw, and tunnels so your dog will need training to become accustomed to the variety of equipment.

This type of training also relies quite heavily on the owner, as the dog will look to you for guidance around the course, so you will need to be able to communicate clearly and effectively in a fast-paced environment. Dogs should wait until they are fully grown to start this type of training due to the physical demand. You can do agility courses for fun or compete around the country.

Socialisation Training

Socialisation training is key to ensuring your dog is calm in social situations with other people or dogs. Your dog will learn how to interact with the surrounding environment appropriately, which will put you at ease in public places. Socialisation skills for dogs are beneficial to help you stay in control of the situation and strengthen your bond when spending time together without feeling scared or anxious about bad behaviour. It’s never too late to introduce or enhance socialisation skills!
