What is a Family Protection Dog?

A Family (or personal) Protection Dog is a dog that lives in your family home but is also trained to detect and deter threats. Not to be confused with a guard dog, our specialist dog training services are what differentiates a family pet from a family protection dog.

The dog serves the purpose of necessary protecting but has the skills to differentiate between who and what is a threat and who is not. They know right from wrong and work on your commands. This is a great option for those looking for a nurturing family dog with added security.

Benefits of Personal Protection Dogs

Personal protection dogs have the dual package of a family pet with extra protection. We recommend choosing a highly trained family dog due to the number of benefits, including:

  • Highly specialist trained
  • Reap the benefits of a loving family dog
  • Unprecedented loyalty to you and your family
  • An extra layer of security – unlike locks and alarm systems, your trained dog cannot be hacked or bypassed.
  • Discourage crime and home invasion
  • Easier to live with – medium-drive dogs with the ideal blend of energy and composure
  • Can live indoors or out for round-the-clock protection

Trusted Trained Protection Dogs

Our specially trained family protection dogs will be part of your family, just like any other dog. They are safe around children, good with strangers and have an excellent temperament.

The big difference is that when needed, these dogs can call on their extra skills to protect your home and your family from intruders and those who would cause you harm. An alarm can be bypassed, and a lock can be forced, but a family protection dog will stand its ground to protect your family and home.

Our Protection Dog Selection Process

When you buy any breed of family protection dog from A&T, you can be sure that it has been carefully selected from the finest breeders in Europe. Each animal is thoroughly checked and tested for health, temperament, and suitability before being imported to the UK for protection dog training.

Guard Dog vs Family Protection Dog

Our family protection dogs are not vicious guard dogs. Guard dogs are trained for aggression, that need to be chained up to control them. We select medium-drive dogs that are much easier to live with than some ultra-active species often used in the protection industry. As a result, our selection and training offer you a friendly, family pet who will only attack on your command.

Our Protection Dog Training

Our family protection dog training takes a full twelve months, producing a balanced animal with an excellent temperament. These dogs are fully obedient both on and off the lead, making them safe around younger children, older children and adults, displaying excellent social behaviour even in unfamiliar situations.

We train our dogs to understand a threatening situation and react to commands, rather than being equipment focused. Equipment-focused training involves using bite sleeves, which can be a major downfall as it is unlikely that a burglar or attacker will be wearing one. This could cause confusion to the dog, and you may not get the necessary response you’d hoped for. Instead of focusing on the training tools, we train our dogs to ‘warn’ and ‘attack’ on your command and to stop just as quickly when instructed. This ensures your family protection dog is ready to protect in any real-life situation that may occur.

We also offer protection dog maintenance programmes to ensure your dog continues to respond to a high standard. These refresher training sessions are free of charge if you bring your dog back every 6 months for 2 weeks.

Family Protection Dogs Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Best Child-Friendly Protection Dog Breed?

A family protection dog is the perfect blend of family pet and peace of mind protection, who you can trust with your children even when you are not around to supervise.

You will find that trained family protection dogs generally are certain breeds as they are more responsive to the training, with born instincts to be alert and protect whilst also being obedient for the family home. Typically, these breeds will include

  • German Shepherd
  • Belgian Malinois
  • Bullmastiff
  • Giant Schnauzer
  • Rottweiler
  • Dobermann

This list however is not exhaustive and any breed of dog can be individually assessed whether it will be responsive to training.

What is the Best Protection Dog Breed for First-Time Owners?

All of our dogs are specially chosen to suit your needs, however, we would advise that German Shepherds are the best option for first-time owners.

Qualities that set them above the rest include being easier to train, loyal and intelligent. As a result, they are often used as working dogs in the police and armed forces, as they have a natural guarding instinct. Additionally, their loyalty makes them protective of their family which makes them the perfect candidate for the job.

Whatever their breed, you can learn more about integrating your new furry friend into the fold in our blog post.

Do We Offer Protection Dogs Worldwide?

Yes, our trained and protection dogs for sale can be delivered to clients worldwide. We have processes in place to make it as seamless as possible, ensuring the dogs have the best care and safety throughout the process.

Are Protection Dogs Safe?

The idea that they may turn on those whom they are trying to protect can dissuade some people from getting a dog for protection. However, we select dogs based on breed, temperament, and suitability to preserve the core value of a protection animal: the safety of your family. A guard dog reacts based on instinct and is trained to alert owners to dangerous or suspicious activity, as well as to attack intruders. In contrast, your family protection dog will act on your command as well as instinct. Essentially, they are entirely safe when it comes to passers-by or people who mean you no harm. They will not get aggressive with people you meet on the street or random callers to your home; they will only step up to protect your property when there is a need to.

This makes them the best dog to keep your home safe, whilst still offering all the benefits of a beloved family pet. Ultimately, an untrained dog is less safe than a dog that has been through professional intensive training.

It is important to note that much like an ordinary family pet, it is important to show them the love and affection they need to establish a bond and keep your furry friend happy. For example, confining your dog in small spaces, harshly punishing them or leaving them without contact for prolonged periods can alter their temperament. Also, the better their bond with you, the greater their trust and desire to protect you. Therefore, you must provide plenty of stimulation and attention to your trusty companions.

Are Protection Dogs Legal in the UK?

Yes, it is legal to have a protection dog in your home, as they are not to be confused with guard dogs. Guard dogs have their own guard dogs legislation, but family protection dogs are family pets that have gone through the correct training to add a layer of protection to your home. Family protection dogs do not fall under these laws and are completely different.

Can a Protection Dog Be a Family Pet?

Yes, these are called family protection dogs. These dogs are part of your family and are obedient in the home, just like any other pet dog. However, they have gone through specific and intensive training to detect and deter threats to the home.

How Much Does a Personal Protection Dog Cost UK?

Family or personal protection dogs typically start from £12,000. These dogs are more expensive than your average pet dog due to the speciality training they have received. Prices will vary depending on the breed, age, and extensiveness of training.

Can My Dog Be a Protection Dog?

Any dog can be trained to be a protection dog through the correct, expert training, regardless of their breed or size. This is because their purpose is to defend rather than be an attacker to threats. However, you will typically see certain breeds are more popular under these categories for sale because of their personality traits, build and instincts.

“I sent my dog to A&T Dogs for training to improve his behaviour and obedience. I missed him, but the guys arranged 3 separate residential sessions, so he wasn’t away for too long at one time. He’s a great dog now, and does just as I say. It’s great!”
