At A&T Trained Dogs, we understand having a dog with a behaviour problem can be difficult to manage. It can affect your relationship with your dog, as well as their quality of life. Our certified dog behaviourists in the North West can provide help and support.

What is a Dog Behaviourist?

A dog behaviourist is a trained expert in the field of animal behaviour and will work with you to help manage and prevent dog behaviour problems. They will seek to understand why a dog behaves the way they do by examining their behaviours in a variety of environments and state of minds.

A dog behaviourist can help dogs that show destructive or aggressive behaviour as they will be able to pinpoint the specific problems and help you address the underlying issue. This could be due to boredom, separation anxiety, or lack of socialisation.

What is the Difference Between a Dog Trainer & a Dog Behaviourist?

The difference between a dog trainer and a dog behaviourist is that a dog trainer teaches a dog something it doesn’t already know, for example, sit, stay, or heel. It is often done by using a reward-based system to reinforce good behaviour. Whereas, dog behaviour therapy is a lot more in-depth, and involves analysing the dog’s psychology and state of mind.

What Does a Dog Behaviourist Do?

Dog behaviourists have a wide range of knowledge of different dog breeds, their traits, behaviours, and situations where bad behaviour occurs, dog-to-dog and dog-to-human relationships, and desensitising.

To be able to address the dog’s behavioural issues, they will conduct a detailed assessment of your dog, which includes background history, health, present day-to-day regimes, diet, genetics, and what happens prior to and after the behaviour of concern. Without this, the reasons why the behaviour is happening will be unknown which means it will be impossible to secure rehabilitation for them.

Once a customised treatment plan has been created, the dog behaviourist will work directly with you to teach you how to continue to carry out the treatment plan successfully.

How Do I Know If I Need a Dog Behaviourist?

If your dog is misbehaving in obedience training classes, or your dog is misbehaving outside the classes, a dog behaviourist will be able to help you dig deeper into the cause of this behaviour and teach you how to implement new regimes and add structure within the home and outside environment.

At A&T Trained Dogs, the types of dogs that have behavioural therapy, include those with extreme anxiety, separation anxiety, aggression, hyperactivity, and boisterous behaviour.
